Sports are supposed to be fun, but they are also hard work. This is not a social club. Students are participating in an athletic endeavor, and, as such, we expect that they will be active the entire time we have practice.
-
To increase participation, we expect each of our athletes to sign up for at least three different events. They won’t necessarily compete in all of those events, but we expect them to practice as if they will.

Track and field is not a sport many middle schoolers participate in regularly, and getting better requires time, patience and hard work. Students should keep that in mind whenever they feel like they aren’t improving. Our season is only eight weeks long, and students might not progress as much as they would like in that time. Therefore, each athlete should measure his/her success by how much effort he/she puts into the season. Furthermore, it is important for each athlete to set personal goals that he/she can be proud of.
-
Everyone who joins Middle School Track is now part of a team. That means we expect our athletes to support one another not only at practice, but at meets as well. When someone on our team is running, jumping, or throwing, every other athlete should be actively cheering them on. We understand that athletes may need to mentally prepare for their own events, but they should not be chatting with their friends when their teammates are on the field of competition. This also means that we expect our athletes to stay at home and away meets until EVERYONE has finished competing. A good team player isn’t only concerned with his/her own performance. He/she should stay and cheer for everyone on the team until the entire team is done.
-
Given the number of students who go out for track, it is very hard for coaches to give each athlete on the team the attention he/she deserves. We, therefore, don’t want to waste time repeating directions or debating coaching decisions with the athletes on our team. We expect our athletes to listen carefully and to do what is asked without complaint. If someone does not agree with a particular coach’s demand, then that person should take it up with the coaching staff after practice. We will be glad to listen to any suggestions athletes might have; we just ask that they are made at appropriate times.

Eighth grade students have seniority. For that reason, we grant them preferential seating on bus trips. They also get to disembark before the seventh grade students do. This privilege comes at a price. We will expect that our eighth grade athletes to be responsible for the equipment (both at practice and at meets).
